A heartwarming story of love, dedication, and hope has touched the hearts of many. Dagmar Gudmundsson, a 27-year-old realtor from Boise, Idaho, faced an unimaginable challenge when her beloved dog, Tyrion, was diagnosed with a life-changing illness. What followed was a journey of resilience, hard work, and a love so deep that no obstacle could stop her from giving her best friend a chance to walk again.
A Strong Bond From the Start
Dagmar first got Tyrion, her Maltese-mini poodle mix, when he was just eight weeks old. For seven years, Tyrion was healthy, full of energy, and always by her side. But eight months ago, everything changed. Tyrion suddenly stopped using his back legs, and after an emergency vet visit and a series of tests, the heartbreaking diagnosis came: an autoimmune disease had attacked his spinal cord, leaving Tyrion paralyzed.

“I got Tyrion when I was a college student, so I really feel like I’ve grown up with him over the years,” Dagmar said. “He’s my best friend and companion, so of course, I would do anything I can to help.”
A Devastating Diagnosis and a Fight to Save Him
When the vets delivered the news, it felt like her world was crashing down. “They said there was a 99% chance he would forever be paralyzed,” Dagmar recalled. “I wasn’t ready to do life without Tyrion. I was really scared that might be a possibility.”
Despite the overwhelming sadness, Dagmar didn’t give up. She spent all her savings and took on a second job to cover Tyrion’s treatment costs. She spent $10,000 on vet bills and therapies. But even with the heavy financial burden, her resolve was unwavering. “I knew I would do whatever I could to give him the best quality of life possible,” she said.

A New Path: Spinal Walking and Therapy
Determined to help Tyrion, Dagmar began researching ways to assist his recovery. She discovered spinal walking, a reflex that allows paralyzed dogs to move their legs. “One night, Tyrion woke up from a nap on the couch and noticed he was walking funny,” Dagmar explained. “We rushed him to the vet, and within three to four hours, he lost all function in his back legs. Everyone’s first guess was IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), but after an MRI and more tests, we found out he had an autoimmune disease attacking his spinal cord.”
The diagnosis was a shock, but Dagmar was not ready to give up. She started Tyrion on a rigorous regimen of acupuncture, physical therapy, and hydrotherapy to help strengthen his back legs. “In the beginning, I really dedicated my life savings and a lot of my time to helping this dog wherever I can. That was the goal. And as you can see, there was progress,” Dagmar said.

The Road to Recovery
Every step of Tyrion's rehabilitation was a challenge, but there were moments of hope that kept Dagmar going. "Early on in the process, I learned about spinal walking," she said. "It’s when paralyzed dogs can unconsciously move their back legs. We started acupuncture, physical therapy, red light therapy, and hydrotherapy. We just kept pushing forward, even when things didn’t look good."
Despite setbacks, Tyrion’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. “You tickle his toes, and he reacts. His reflexes are firing. It was such a huge moment for us,” Dagmar shared. “There were ups and downs, like when he had a huge scab on his back, which I thought was a reaction to the chemo treatment. But we just stopped that and kept going with the therapies.”

A Moment of Triumph
Months of hard work and determination paid off. “This was the first video I ever got of him trying to stand on his own,” Dagmar recalled. “It was emotional—he was so weak, but it was incredible to see. Looking back, I had no idea how incredible it was. Progress didn’t stop. It actually accelerated. In the last few months, Tyrion’s improvement has been astronomical!”

Dagmar’s dedication continues to pay off as Tyrion gradually regains his strength and mobility. “Seeing him improve over the past seven months has meant the world to me,” she said. “It’s taught me not to take things for granted because even the little victories are big moments in this journey.”
The Power of Love and Determination
Tyrion’s journey is far from over, but each step forward is a testament to the power of love, persistence, and determination. As Dagmar continues to care for him, one thing is certain: she will never stop fighting for her dog. “Thank you to everyone who's been following along with Tyrion's journey. This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to show you more,” Dagmar said.
This remarkable story reminds us that with love, faith, and hard work, even the most difficult challenges can be overcome. Tyrion’s recovery is not only a victory for him but also a powerful example of how resilience, family, and hope can change lives.
