Frequent urination and nocturia not only affect quality of life and sleep quality but may also hide more serious diseases, even cancer. Frequent urination has many causes, including urinary tract infection, prostatic hypertrophy in middle-aged and older men, and vaginitis and other gynecological disorders in women. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) believes frequent urination is related to poor liver and kidney functionalities.

Through the application of Chinese medicinal herbs, mild yet effective dietary therapy, and some special tea, TCM targets these urinary system issues to maintain proper kidney and liver function, improving frequent urination and prostate problems.

Stress May Induce Frequent Urination

Frequent urination is the need to go to the bathroom more often than usual. Most people can sleep for six to eight hours without urinating. If urination occurs frequently during the night, it is called nocturia.

If you urinate frequently, it is probably because you are experiencing too much stress and anxiety. You can try to relax, reduce the burdens of work and life, and get proper rest. Maybe you can even take a few days off or go on vacation. After the stress is gone, the need to frequently urinate might dissipate.

Moreover, pregnant women often experience frequent urination in the later stages of pregnancy because the uterus presses against the bladder. In addition, women who have had their uterus removed also experience frequent urination.

5 Types of Food to Nourish the Liver and Kidneys

From the TCM perspective, frequent urination is related to poor liver and kidney functionalities. People with frequent urination can eat more foods that nourish the liver and kidneys, such as sesame, cashew nuts, black beans, mulberry, wolfberry, and the like.
People who often stay up late, or women approaching menopause or already in menopause should consider eating these five types of food to nourish the liver and kidneys.

Kidney Nourishing Tea

This tea is fairly popular among TCM physicians. Drinking it regularly can help maintain the urinary tract and gradually improve the condition of frequent urination. It is also suitable for people with high blood pressure and diabetes.
Preparation: Take 12 grams (0.4 ounce) of Astragalus and 20 grams (0.7 ounce) each of Plantago asiatica, corn silk, and Lysimachiae herba, wash them, and put them in a pot. Add 1,000 milliliters (2 pints) of water and boil, then simmer over low heat for five to 10 minutes before drinking.

Red Bean Barley Soup

Both red beans and barley are known for their nutritional benefits. Eating red bean and barley soup can nourish the liver and kidneys and improve diuresis. Diuresis means expelling water through urine and can also treat gynecological diseases.

Incorrect Sitting Posture Can Lead to Gynecological Diseases

Some seats are too soft and make for a lack of ventilation in the groin area, resulting in health problems in the pelvic bottom, such as metritis, cystitis, urethritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, irregular menstruation, and endometrium.
If you often find yourself in such a position, it is best to replace the chair. Find one with a flat, firm base as soon as possible. Usually, the flatter, the better, as it is more hygienic and helps with posture, too.

Pelvic Base Muscle Exercises

Regular exercise of the pelvic floor muscles helps to maintain bladder function, improving frequent urination, slimming the lower abdomen, and lifting the buttocks.

Practice

  1. Lie flat on the ground with your legs bent and your hands flat by your sides.
  2. Slowly raise your buttocks, and at the same time, pull up on the anal muscle and tighten the buttocks muscles. Stay in this position for about 10 seconds, then lower the buttocks back to the resting position.
  3. Repeat the above five to 10 times, and make it a habit to do it every day before bed.

1 Magic Acupoint to Improve Frequent Urination

The Taixi acupoint rests somewhere between the medial malleolus and the Achilles tendon. Pressing the Taixi acupoint on both feet 30 times a day before bed can replenish vitality and improve frequent urination.

TCM believes that the meridians are the channels through which human energy runs. Internal organs are connected to various parts of the body through these meridians. Points on the meridians with special functions are called acupoints. Stimulating the corresponding acupoints through acupuncture, massage, and the like works to treat diseases of the corresponding organs.

4 Acupoints to Improve Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a common urinary system disease in men, characterized by difficulty urinating, weak urination, reduced urine output, and “murky” urine.

There are many causes of prostatitis, some of which may be related to sitting for long periods. Modern-day people develop a habit of sitting in the office staring at the computer most of the day and using smartphones on the sofa after returning home. These habits lead to poor blood circulation in the lower body parts, making the urinary system vulnerable to illness.

For this type of prostate problem, you can try pressing four dedicated acupoints on the liver meridian: Ququan, Ligou, Zhongfeng, and Taichong. They all have a healing effect on the urinary system and thus help protect the prostate.

Among the four, Taichong is especially effective for treating prostatitis and gynecological diseases. However, be mentally prepared that pressing this acupoint will be quite painful.

Millet Porridge Oil Improves Urinating Difficulty

A friend of mine suddenly had a stomachache and could not urinate. An enlarged prostate actually caused this, but he didn’t want to take medicine. I then recommended he use a method recorded in the TCM classic “Compendium of Materia Medica,” which advises to drink millet porridge oil. After doing this, he could urinate smoothly and recovered without taking medication.
Millet porridge oil is an aqueous porridge from millet and water with a diuretic effect. Ensure you use less millet and more water; avoid cooking it too thick. Try eating millet porridge oil for a month, and your prostate problems may be improved.

Peanut Vine Shows Miraculous Effects on Prostatic Hypertrophy

Prostatic hypertrophy is common in men over 50. Some people think that surgery is the only way to solve prostate hypertrophy, but this is not the case. TCM has devised quite a number of natural yet effective ways to treat it. One uses peanut vine, also called peanut root, to improve prostate diseases.

While teaching in the United States, I met an international student from mainland China. His hometown was a place rich in peanuts. His parents both had urinary system problems, so he told his parents about the efficacy of peanut vine I talked about.

His father did not believe in Chinese medicine or herbs and did not try it. However, his mother tried boiling water with peanut vines and found urination much easier. Later, the whole village learned to use peanut vine to protect their urinary systems.

Pumpkin Helps Maintain the Prostate

Pumpkin has a beneficial effect on the prostate and helps prevent prostate diseases. You can supplement your meal with more pumpkin or pumpkin byproducts, such as pumpkin seeds, pumpkin leaves, and the like.
Pumpkin soy milk is a prostate health drink that is simple and easy to make daily. It can be prepared by cutting 380 grams (13.4 ounces) of pumpkin into small pieces, putting it into a blender, and blending it. Then add 700 milliliters (1.5 pints) of soy milk, stir together, and drink.

Maintaining Gynecological Health

Excessive cleaning and overuse of antibiotics may cause itching, excessive vaginal discharge, and odor in women’s vulvas. In the long run, these practices will only worsen symptoms.

The reason is that excessive cleaning and excessive use of antibiotics kill the lactic acid bacteria and other fungi that play a protective role in this area, enabling external germs to enter and cause disease. Stopping the overuse of antibiotics and overwashing will allow these problems to resolve naturally.

You can try the Chinese medicine Cnidium monnieri for these gynecological conditions, which sterilizes and relieves itching.

Preparation: Add water to Cnidium monnieri, simmer over low heat for about 20 to 30 minutes, then drain the liquid into a basin and use it to wash the vulva when the liquid is still slightly warm. Daily washing can improve itching, discharge, odor, and other conditions.

Some of the herbs mentioned above may sound unfamiliar, but many can be found in health food and Asian grocery stores. In addition, because everyone’s body constitution is different, the corresponding treatment methods are also different. Please consult a professional health care provider for specific treatment plans.
