【Classical music and nature 古典音樂小站】Johannes Brahms: 7 Fantasien, Op. 116 - 6. Intermezzo in E major. This beautiful piece was played by Ivan Ilic. It has Creative Commons license (CC BY 3.0 DEED, Attribution 3.0 Unported) and is provided through www.musopen.org.
‘Almost sheepishly, Johannes Brahms asked his publisher Fritz Simrock in October 1893 for a suitable title for his last piano pieces. He himself ‘probably had no choice but to call them piano pieces!’ The manuscripts show how Brahms struggled with the titles: ‘Clavierstücke’ and ‘Fantasien’ are crossed out several times. The titles of the individual pieces also seem like stopgap solutions or like hiding behind the general: intermezzo, capriccio, ballad, romance and rhapsody follow one another in a seemingly haphazard sequence.
The term used most often is also the one most characteristic of the late Brahms: Intermezzo. As if in passing, between the lines, without claiming anything too momentous, the aging master wanted to express himself in these pieces. His Viennese critic friend Eduard Hanslick once remarked how in the late chamber music of Brahms the scherzo gives way to the intermezzo. In the piano music, too, the waves (apparently) smooth out, while the piano writing appears to be imbued with the deepest melancholy.‘ Source: kammermusikfuehrer.de
