The demands of everyday life are better met when we take time to rejuvenate.

After yesterday’s workout, playing basketball, and hill sprinting with my son, I am certainly feeling the effect.

So today I’ll take some rest and recovery time. Anyone who is into fitness knows the hidden value of recovery—it’s the time we get stronger. As important as the workout is, recovery is equally if not more so, because that’s when our body rebuilds itself. Without rest, we can burn out or get injured.

Beyond fitness, the power of rest applies to work, learning, relationships, and more. Without adequate rest from life’s daily requirements, you’re likely to grind yourself into the ground. Long-term progress is hindered.

4 Ways Rest Can Improve Life

Taking adequate rest builds strength in many aspects of our lives. Try these strategies if you want to:
1. Improve focus. Give yourself time to rest your mind. Take a walk, meditate, or take regular breaks from screen time.
2. Effectively deal with life’s chaos, uncertainty, and discomforts. Uprisings are inevitable and can be physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. Remember to nurture yourself with rest.
3. Become more productive in tasks and learning. Taking time from having your nose to the grindstone allows for new ideas and lets learning take root.
4. Maintain a healthy relationship with your partner. Rest from intimate relationships is essential. When we are able to take time to be alone, we have more love, understanding, and compassion for others.

Take a self-assessment. Where in your life do you feel depleted or worn down? Recognizing when we need rest is key. As with anything else in life, developing a habit of getting essential rest takes discipline.
