Addressing the Rumors

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the federal government has provided all the resources he needed to deal with the storm. The statement came amid widespread rumors questioning the federal government’s recovery efforts.

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that DeSantis has been “cooperative” with the federal government ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall on Wednesday. The comment follows Vice President Kamala Harris’s accusation that DeSantis did not answer her phone call ahead of the hurricane. Biden said that DeSantis, a Republican, “has been cooperative” and has “gotten all that he needs” from the White House.

“I literally gave him my personal phone number to call,” Biden added, referring to DeSantis. “So I don’t know—there was a rough start in some places, but every governor, every governor from Florida to North Carolina, has been fully cooperative and supportive and acknowledged what this team is doing.” Read the full story here›

Ready to Kill

Mysteries enshroud Ryan Routh, the 58-year-old man charged with attempting to kill former President Donald Trump at his Florida golf course. But one thing about Routh is clear to humanitarian aid worker Chelsea Walsh, a travel nurse who met him overseas.

Walsh, who warned U.S. authorities that Routh was dangerous more than two years ago, now says this about the foiled assassination attempt: “The Ryan I know, he definitely would have pulled the trigger without a second thought; I think they got him just in time.”

Our colleagues went door-to-door in Hawaii and North Carolina and scoured troves of public records to reconstruct Routh’s decline from model citizen to the erratic Ukraine activist now facing attempted assassination charges. Read the full story here›

A Master of Laughter: 3 Pointers From Ronald Reagan for Us Today
A Master of Laughter: 3 Pointers From Ronald Reagan for Us Today
In a nation grappling with deep political divides and constant tension, a little humor and civility might seem elusive. Yet, history shows us that even in times of strife, a lighthearted approach can build bridges and ease conflict. One figure who mastered this art was Ronald Reagan, who was often called "The Great Communicator." Known for his quick wit and charming humor, Reagan used levity to disarm critics, connect with world leaders, and tackle tough issues with grace.

Take, for instance, his famous quip during the 1984 presidential debates: "I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.” His self-deprecating humor not only defused a tense moment but also won over the audience—and even his opponent.

But Reagan’s humor went beyond entertainment; it served as a tool for connection and optimism. Whether dealing with political adversaries or personal crises, his ability to find light in dark moments helped foster understanding and unity. As America faces its own challenges today, we could all benefit from Reagan’s example of using humor to bring people together.
