In an unexpected development, companies are now developing something called bioplastic due to the skyrocketing amount of microplastics in both the environment, as well as within the human body itself.
These are plastic alternatives made from living organisms that are sometimes specifically meant to be eaten, which then (at least in theory) biodegrade within the human body.
However, in order to understand how we got to this point, let’s take a step back and go through the full backstory.
