In America’s most arid state, a yearslong legal battle over water rights could define how states regulate access to water.
Epoch Times journalist John Haughey traveled to Mineral County, Nevada, where a lakefront community once bustled with recreational activity like fishing, boating, and camping, has shrunk to a shadow of its former self. The desert oasis clustered around Walker Lake, which has since turned into a sludge pond because farmers upstream on the Walker River have been diverting water. “The last fish was caught in 2013 or 2015, I believe. When the fish died, the fishing died; boating, recreation, that all just disappeared,” Mineral County Commissioner Tony Ruse told John. “There were restaurants here. There were hotels here. There were businesses here. Now? All gone, just 300 residents struggling.” The court is unlikely to rule against the farmers, who own the water rights. But the locals who want to save the lake are exploring a creative solution.
