WORDS OF WISDOM
"Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far"
THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Good Sunday morning! Today we’re covering the prospect of a Trump interview with Joe Rogan, hundreds of 7-Eleven stores closing, and the chronic disease epidemic in the U.S. and U.K.

The Trump-Rogan Experience

Elon Musk suggested earlier this week that a Joe Rogan podcast featuring former President Donald Trump “will happen.” The X account for Rogan’s podcast later shared a story about Musk’s comment, suggesting that the interview may be in the works.

Rogan, the host of one of the biggest podcasts in the world, has not endorsed a candidate in the 2024 presidential election. He has said Robert F. Kennedy is the only one who makes sense, prompting an irate response from Trump. The comedian also praised the debate performance of Kamala Harris.

Should the interview happen, Rogan has previously disclosed what his question may be. “If I talk to him, my number one question would be, what happens when you get in there? What is that experience like? Because no one really knows until you're in office,” Rogan said in an episode aired on Oct. 8. “They don't tell you how it's going to go down if you don't make it. They don't reveal all that. What is that experience like? How can you prepare for it without actually being elected president?” Read the full story here›

444 Stores Closing

Convenience store chain 7-Eleven will close hundreds of stores as the company faces declining sales. Middle and lower income groups are consuming more prudently amid inflation and falling incomes, the firm said.

Challenging employment conditions, high interest rates, and inflationary pressures have led to a decline in labor incomes, 7-Eleven said when announcing the closure of more than 400 stores in North America. The firm credited the robustness of the North American economy to consumption by high-income earners, noting that middle and lower-income groups have taken a “more prudent approach” in this regard.

The company said several factors contributed to the downsizing decision: a large portion of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, a reduction in food stamp benefits, growth of online retail sales, cyber outage incident that impacted operations, and declining tobacco product sales. Diet and Chronic Disease

The majority of adults in the U.S. and the U.K. are unhealthy, says British cardiologist and public health campaigner Dr. Aseem Malhotra. And yet, these countries have some of the highest health expenditures in the Western world.

Poor diet is one of the biggest drivers of America’s chronic disease epidemic, says Dr. Malhotra, with 60% of calorie intake in the U.S. and 57% in the U.K. coming from ultra-processed foods. More than 60% of America’s adult population is overweight or obese, with 88% having abnormal metabolic health markers. “You can't fix healthcare until you fix food,” Dr. Malhotra told our colleague, Jan Jekielek in an interview on American Thought Leaders.

Dr. Malhotra recently released a documentary, “First! Do No Pharm,” which examines the commercialization of modern medicine and how that is affecting our physical, mental, and social well-being. “There is a false perception out there that medicine is an exact science, like, say, physics or chemistry, when in fact, it is a social science—the science of human beings,” says Dr. Malhotra.
