President Donald Trump said that his team of negotiators had a “very good meeting today” with China in their first round of trade talks on Saturday. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer began meetings in Geneva with a Chinese delegation of high-ranking officials led by Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The two sides convened in an effort to negotiate a way out of their trade war, which has seen tariffs on goods from either nation reach more than 100 percent. The first round of talks went on for more than 10 hours.
“Many things discussed, much agreed to,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Saturday night. “A total reset negotiated in a friendly, but constructive, manner.” He then called for Beijing to allow American businesses to operate in China.
“We want to see, for the good of both China and the U.S., an opening up of China to American business. GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!” Trump wrote. Both sides said that the talks will continue on Sunday.
Trade between the world’s two largest economies topped more than $660 billion last year. Trump suggested he was considering lowering U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports to 80 percent in the coming days.
Hopes for a significant breakthrough are on shaky ground as both sides have struggled to acknowledge who called for the talks to take place, with both publicly saying that the meeting was being held at the request of the other. (More) More Politics |

The Food and Drug Administration has approved three color additives derived from natural sources for use in food products, responding to increasing public concern over the health risks associated with synthetic dyes.
The agency approved two new natural color additive options and expanded approval of a third one. They are galdieria extract blue, butterfly pea flower extract, and calcium phosphate.
“The FDA determines whether an additive is safe to use by considering the projected human dietary exposure to the color additive, the additive’s toxicological data, and other relevant information, such as published literature,” the agency said.
U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has made phasing out synthetic dyes from the nation’s food supply a centerpiece of his “Make America Healthy Again” agenda, hailed the decision as “a major step” toward that goal.
“For too long, our food system has relied on synthetic, petroleum-based dyes that offer no nutritional value and pose unnecessary health risks,” he said in a press release. “We’re removing these dyes and approving safe, natural alternatives—to protect families and support healthier choices.” (More) More U.S. News |

Ukraine and its international partners are calling on Russia to accept a U.S. proposal for a “full, unconditional cease-fire” on Monday. The statement came as Ukrainian leadership met with delegations from international allies in Kyiv, who were visiting in a push to pressure Moscow to come to the negotiating table to end its war with Ukraine.
Leaders from France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom arrived together at the train station in Kyiv on Saturday to meet Zelenskyy and express their shared support for an immediate cease-fire deal.
“We reiterate our backing for President Trump’s calls for a peace deal and call on Russia to stop obstructing efforts to secure an enduring peace,” the leaders said in a joint statement. “Alongside the U.S., we call on Russia to agree to a full and unconditional 30-day cease-fire to create the space for talks on a just and lasting peace.”
The visit marked the first time that leaders from the four countries have traveled together to Ukraine, and it was also Friedrich Merz’s first visit to Ukraine as the chancellor of Germany.
The statement also followed closely behind a phone call between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described as “constructive.” (More) More World News: |

The foundation of a stable society is a stable family—and that starts with strong marriages. (Biba Kayewich) |
Recent statistics out of the UK indicate that, for the first time in human history, fewer than half of British adults are married. “It is one of the oldest institutions known to humanity. ... Now, more than four millennia later, marriage could be on the verge of dying out.”
Some realities are so fundamental to human life and society that a world without them can hardly be pictured, except in nightmarish visions of dystopian novels at the fringes of our imagination. These realities include the mother who cradles her baby in her arms, the friends who keep shadows at bay through laughter and song, and the soldier who takes a bullet to save his comrades. A world without these simple realities loses an irreplaceable element of the human experience.
Even this scattering of examples falls short of the importance of one reality that forms the pillar of civilization since before civilization even had a name: marriage. That’s when a man and a woman proclaim to one another in front of the community, “I love you and I will stay with you forever.” This fundamental commitment makes all other commitments possible; it’s the contract that undergirds all other contracts.
Marriage brings stability to a society because each man and woman plants the tree of their marriage within the larger community, and in due time it bears fruit. Marriage has long been the means of perpetuating society through giving it new members, who can be raised in stable, loving homes established on the vow of commitment made between husband and wife.
