Preparing for the Unexpected: The Bug-Out Bag It’s the middle of the night. You wake from a deep sleep and smell smoke. When you come to, you see flames in the next room and realize your house is on fire.
This is just one of many scenarios that can happen—at any time—to anyone. You may need to act in an instant, and having a bug-out bag prepared can help you mitigate the challenges emergencies present and ensure you have what you need to survive during—and after—the emergency.
These kits equip you with essential tools and supplies to handle a variety of emergencies and disasters. Backpacks are typically used for portability, which becomes crucial if you need to evacuate your home quickly or travel long distances on foot. Your bug-out bag should not be too heavy to carry long distances during an emergency. For example, if your car breaks down, or you need to flee on foot because of a forest fire or other natural disaster. Our colleague, Emma Suttie, spoke to survival expert Creek Stewart to help you prepare a bag of your own. (Full Story) |
Fentanyl Freeway California spent billions to stigmatize cigarettes, while destigmatizing opioids, the deadliest drug in U.S. history. Experts are watching to see if the gamble will work.
Nationwide, more than $50 billion is expected to flow from legal settlements with opioid manufacturers and distributors over the next two decades. California is in line to receive about $4 billion. In the first two years, California state programs have primarily used their share for “harm reduction” efforts, including opioid overdose reversal medication, needle exchange, and public education campaigns aimed at destigmatizing drug use. But some experts wonder if another obvious lesson from the fight against Big Tobacco—in which stigmatization, graphic warnings about the dangers of cigarettes, and enforcement led to a radical decrease in smoking—is missing from the state’s approach to the fentanyl crisis. Our colleague, Beige Luciano-Adams explores California’s controversial approach to the fentanyl crisis. (Full Story) How did you enjoy today's Morning Brief? Tell us what you think here. |
