Ahead of a meeting between the White House and top Chinese regime officials over the weekend, President Donald Trump signaled that he envisions cutting tariffs on China from 145 percent to 80 percent as a result of the negotiations.
The meeting is scheduled to take place in Switzerland, marking the first talks between the two major economies since Trump announced 145 percent duties on Chinese imports and Beijing responded with 125 percent tariffs on U.S. imports.
An “80 percent Tariff on China seems right! Up to Scott B,” Trump wrote on his social media account on Friday morning, referring to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The Republican president also suggested in a separate Truth Social post on Friday that China open its markets to the United States and its businesses, writing in all caps: “Would be so good for them!!! Closed markets don’t work anymore!!!”
Trump previously stated that he wouldn’t lower the tariffs on Chinese products to hold trade talks. But on Thursday, when he was asked about the tariffs, the president said he may lower the rates if the negotiations over the weekend are productive.
“We’re going to see,” Trump told reporters. “Right now, you can’t get any higher. It’s at 145 [percent], so we know it’s coming down.” (More) More Politics: |

Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey lost communication for about 90 seconds on Friday, said the Federal Aviation Administration. The 90-second outage took place earlier in the day at around 3:55 a.m. local time, the federal agency said.
The FAA also said that due to weather and low cloud bases, there is a traffic management program in effect for air traffic arriving at the Newark airport, which has caused some arriving flights to be delayed.
Air traffic monitoring website FlightAware said at the time of publication that Newark airport, or EWR, is seeing departure delays of more than an hour and arrival delays of 45 minutes to an hour, while inbound flights are being delayed at their origin by 4 hours and 22 minutes.
FlightAware also showed that nearly 300 flights at Newark have been delayed, representing about 28 percent of all flights. Another 131 flights, or 12 percent, had been canceled.
It’s the second time in about a week that air traffic controllers lost contact with planes over Newark since last week, triggering widespread flight delays and cancellations. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed this week that the airport lost contact with planes for about 30 seconds, adding that the issue “has to be fixed.” (More) More U.S. News |

Russian leadership is seeking unrealistic concessions in exchange for initiating a cease-fire with Ukraine, according to Vice President JD Vance.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had demanded that Ukraine surrender some territories that Russia has thus far failed to occupy or capture, Vance told Fox News.
Despite Russia’s overreach, Vance said the Trump administration anticipated that both sides of the conflict would initially set unrealistic goals with the hopes of achieving a more favorable outcome when real negotiations began. “We knew that Russia would ask for too much because the Russian perception is that, on the ground, they’re winning,” Vance said. “We don’t want Ukraine to collapse. We obviously want Ukraine to remain a sovereign country. But Russia can’t expect to be given territory that they haven’t even conquered yet, and that’s one of the things that they put down in that initial peace plan.”
That territory likely refers to the provinces of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhia, which Putin claimed to have annexed in 2022 but which Russia still does not completely control. Russian-backed separatists in the Donbas and Luhansk regions initially rebelled against the Ukrainian government in 2014, following Russia’s annexation of Crimea. That uprising began a brutal guerrilla war that lasted until Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. (More) More World News: |

Bird (Morgan Wolk) hopes for a better future in “As the Crow Flies.” (GJW+) |
It’s a tasty treat to sample indie film hors d'oeuvres now and then, especially when many big-name studios seem content to serve up reheated leftovers from a franchise buffet.
This excess of CGI explosions and minimal meaning has driven many movie lovers to seek out something more nourishing, so it’s no surprise that faith-and-family films and other heartfelt indies are gaining traction.
“As the Crow Flies” isn’t faith-based, but it fits the bill. It’s a film that celebrates loyalty, family, and that rarest of cinematic spices: sincerity.
Set against the lush backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains, our tale begins with a voiceover from the main character, Bird (Morgan Wolk). She gives the lay of the land—Red Pine, North Carolina, population 1,152.
There she lives in the only cabin on Silver Cove Lake with her brother Boe (Alec Shaw), their buddy Larry (Anderson Boyd), and two kids they raise like their own. The group is tight-knit, fiercely loyal, and seen by the town as lovable outlaws.
Bird and Boe have been running moonshine since they were barely out of elementary school. Yep, Appalachian career planning starts early. But moonshine takes a backseat in this story. When a group of masked bank robbers needs someone to sneak their stolen loot past law enforcement roadblocks, they call in the best “’leggers” in the game, Bird and Boe. What follows is a cross-country delivery run fraught with peril, colorful characters, breathtaking scenery, and the kind of heartfelt dialogue that makes you forget you’re watching a low-budget indie film. (More) “As the Crow Flies” is now available on Gan Jing World. As an exclusive to our subscribers, the film will be available to watch for free until May 11. |
